As a result of Australian-first enactment of legislation protecting many people with innate variations of sex characteristics from harmful practices in medical settings, the Australian Capital Territory government has established a Restricted Medical Treatment Assessment Board. The new Board will ensure that contested medical interventions on protected persons are subject to independent oversight and approval.

I’m honoured to have been appointed to this new Board. I’d like to thank Minster for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith MLA, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on the new board to ensure respect for the human rights and health of protected patients in the ACT.

I have written on the new legislation in an open access journal article in the peer-reviewed Australian Journal of Human Rights.
